Karisma Kapoor is in the news because of the inheritance battle over ex-husband Sunjay Kapur's vast empire. Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur's kids - Samaira and Kiaan - have moved to court alleging that Priya Kapur (Sunjay Kapur's third wife) forged his will to cut them out of the inheritance. As the court agreed to hear the case, a lot of details came to fore. It was also being reported that Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur were in contact with each other through WhatsApp and allegedly there were plans to seek Portugese citizenship for their kids. However, the latest reports suggest that Karisma Kapoor rejected the offer to be a Portuguese citizen.
What does lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani has to say about Sunjay Kapur's move for Portuguese citizenship?
Now, Karisma Kapoor's kids' lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani has shed some light on this new development of Portuguese citizenship. In a chat with Republic World, Mahesh Jethmalani revealed that Karisma Kapoor ultimately rejected the idea of of giving up Indian citizenship. Reportedly, Sunjay Kapur informed her that Indian government does not grant dual citizenship. He was quoted saying, "She was told that she would have to give up Indian citizenship if she took up Portuguese citizenship, and she refused." He also added that Sunjay Kapur's move for Portuguese citizenship for children casts suspicion on the will.
Further, he explained that Sunjay Kapur could be considering Portuguese citizenship for his children in order to save them from inheritance tax. But the timing of it raises suspicion. Mahesh Jethmalani was quoted saying, "But certainly, he was toying with the idea of Portuguese citizenship for his two children for the reason that properties overseas would be exempted from inheritance tax and all 3 of his kids one from Mrs Priya Kapur and two from Karisma Kapoor all three of them would be saved from inheritance tax because Portugal doesn't have an inheritance tax regime. So, if in May 2025, you are trying to create citizenship for your children to avoid inheritance tax on overseas property, it is a little surprising that you had already executed a will in March 2025, in which all the overseas properties are devolved to Mrs Priya Sachdev and none to the children, so that's a suspicious circumstance."
Reportedly, Sunjay Kapur's empire is worth Rs 30,000 crore. Allegedly, at a family meeting held on July 30, Priya Kapur presented the will of Sunjay Kapur that was executed in March 2025. Priya Kapur has now been asked to list all the movable and immovable assets of Sunjay Kapur, by court.
