Academy Award winner Julia Roberts has finally addressed her potential involvement in Sony Pictures’ upcoming sequel to 1997’s classic romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding. In the original movie, Roberts played the role of Julianne Potter, who made a pact with her male best friend that they would marry each other if both of them were unmarried by the age of 28.
What did Julia Roberts say about My Best Friend’s Wedding 2?
During a recent interview with Variety, when asked if the studio had already approached her about reprising her role in My Best Friend’s Wedding 2, Roberts confirmed that they have indeed been talking to her about the project. Understandably, she wasn’t able to provide more details since it appears that her appearance in the sequel hasn’t been finalized yet.
Surprisingly, after Roberts’ confirmation, After the Hunt director Luca Guadagnino chimed in on the topic by expressing his interest in potentially directing the sequel. He revealed that if given the chance, he would helm the project “in a second.” This possibility seemed to excite Roberts’ After the Hunt co-star Andrew Garfield, who called it “fantastic.”
Last July, it was reported that My Best Friend’s Wedding 2 is now in the early stages of development, with Past Lives director Celine Song attached to pen the screenplay. Besides Roberts, the studio may also be planning to bring back Dermot Mulroney‘s Michael O’Neal, since he was the first one to talk about the sequel.
Directed by P.J. Hogan, the original movie also starred Cameron Diaz, Rupert Everett, Philip Bosco, M. Emmet Walsh, Rachel Griffiths, Carrie Preston, and Susan Sullivan. It received three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for Roberts, and Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture for Everett. Nearly three decades since its debut, the movie still maintains a Certified Fresh score of 74% on Rotten Tomatoes.
