Sometimes, truth-based reality can be stranger and funnier than anything fiction can conjure up, and James McAvoy proves it in his directorial debut, California Schemin’. Inspired by the wild true story of Scottish rap duo Silibil N’ Brains, the film follows childhood friends Gavin Bain (Séamus McLean Ross) and Billy Boyd (Samuel Bottomley), whose dreams of hip-hop stardom are dashed when the London industry dismisses them for their thick Dundonian accents. Rather than giving up entirely on their dreams, the pair reinvent themselves as American MCs from Southern California, complete with false identities and pitch-perfect West Coast accent impersonations.
