For a show that's been on the air for over half a century now, Saturday Night Live has had remarkably few successful spin-offs. Sure, there have been a whole bunch of movies inspired by SNL sketches over the years, but there’s really only ever been one attempt to do something similar on television. On two separate occasions — both exactly nine years apart — NBC took the show's beloved Weekend Update segment and floated it as a standalone primetime series called Weekend Update Thursday.
