HBO has ordered a five-episode limited series that will reopen one of the most explosive court cases of the 1990s. Meghann Fahy will star in The Trial of Louise Woodward, with Susanne Bier directing and executive producing every episode.

The series tackles the 1997 case of Louise Woodward, an 18-year-old British au pair accused of shaking a baby to death in her American host family’s home. The trial ignited a media circus on both sides of the Atlantic, feeding a frenzy of tabloid headlines and live television coverage.

Matthew Barry created the series and will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Susanne Bier, an Academy and Emmy Award winner, will direct all five episodes and executive produce. Production begins this August, and HBO expects to release the series in 2027.

Barry described the project as a chance to revisit a story that exposed deep social fault lines. “The trial of Louise Woodward raised profound questions about childcare, working mothers, class, and the role of an emerging 24/7 media,” he said. “Thirty years later, those questions feel more urgent and relevant than ever.”

The case divided public opinion a lot. British audiences rallied behind Woodward, painting her as a naive teenager trapped in a foreign legal system. American media often portrayed her as a killer. The series is also deemed to examine these clashing narratives and the people caught inside them.

Bier brings a long history of directing tense, character-driven dramas, including The Night Manager and HBO’s The Undoing. She recently directed Fahy in Netflix’s The Perfect Couple. This project reunites the actor and director on a story that demands the same precise, unsettling tone.
