What happens in the Chad Powers trailer?
The video shows Powell as the titular quarterback who accidentally ends his football career after making a ridiculous mistake during a crucial moment in the game. In hopes of playing again, Powell’s Russ channels his inner Mrs. Doubtfire by trying out for another football team while wearing a disguise and taking on the new identity of Chad Powers. It highlights the challenges he’ll go through to keep his identity a secret.
Chad Powers is co-created by Powell and Michael Waldron, who also co-wrote the pilot. The half-hour comedy is based on the Eli Manning sketch produced by NFL Films and Omaha Productions, which aired on ESPN+ as part of the Eli’s Places series. The show also stars Perry Mattfeld as Ricky, Quentin Plair as Coach Byrd, Wynn Everett as Tricia, Frankie A. Rodriguez as Danny, and Steve Zahn as Jake Hudson.
This marks Powell’s first major TV project as the solo lead after previously appearing in 2015’s short-lived slasher comedy Scream Queens. In addition, Powell is also executive producing via his Barnstorm Productions banner, along with Jamie Horowitz, Ben Brown, and ESPN. Former Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning and his brother, former NFL player Peyton Manning, have also boarded the project as executive producers. The series is produced by 20th Television, with Waldron and Adam Fasullo as producers.
