In recent years, Gleeson has oscillated between TV and film, and heroes and villains. This year alone has seen him play murderous drug lords holding Julianne Moore hostage in Echo Valley, as well as adventurous millionaires in the family-friendly Fountain of Youth, both for Apple TV. Gleeson’s career is one that you can never predict its next step, whether he’ll be a serial killer in a prestige drama, a forlorn Sally Rooney-type loner, or an affable sidekick in an epic franchise: “I think that back and forth is part of what keeps you hungry,” Gleeson tells me of his constant juggling of genres, themes, and formats.
