For the Indiana Fever, the game on Saturday night against the Dallas Wings might be just another regular-season game. But for Caitlin Clark, it was far from personal. It’s been around 9 months since CC tip-toed in a WNBA regular-season game due to her groin injury. As the Gainbridge Fieldhouse assembled to see their crown jewel, it suddenly seemed like the injury nemesis is still not behind her completely, as she went to the Fever tunnel twice during the game. But now, a Fever insider has come clean on this, adding an alternate assessment to CC’s recovery explanation.
In the post-game press conference, Clark dismissed any injury rumors surrounding her, stating it’s just because of her back stiffness. “It gets out of line pretty quickly. It’s just that, getting my back put back in place a little bit, but other than that, I feel great,” she said. In a follow-up of the game, analyst Scott Agness shared his point of view regarding it while speaking on his YouTube channel.
“We did see her go back to the Fever tunnel multiple times, unclear of what it was,” Agness said. “She was asked about it after the game, and she said it was just back stiffness. We’ve seen throughout her career that she’s battled some back pain and tightness.”
“I got to wonder in this on how much of it was probably her being tense and anxious, and a little nervous for this game just because how long it has been. She is detail-oriented. She is process-oriented and routine-oriented. So, you try to re-establish that, get back out there, and play 31 minutes. It’s the most she has played in the preseason, where it was mostly kept between 18-20 minutes,” he added further.
Agness’s assessment does make a lot of sense, though. Over the years, we’ve seen top basketball pros feel such nervousness after an injury haul. Infamously, NBA veteran Kevin Durant admitted back in 2020 that he was “anxious and nervous” after her return to the league following a 500+ day absence due to an Achilles tear. And in Clark’s scenario, it might be the same.
Of course, CC has spent some quality minutes on the court during her stint for Team USA at the World Cup qualifiers. She looked impressive and won the tournament’s MVP award. On top of that, she also had a great run in the preseason stretch, recording 40 minutes across the three games she played. But the pressure of returning to the league’s regular season with so many eyeballs focused on her, of course, brings immense pressure of its own even for a seasoned player like Clark.

In the post-game press conference, CC herself shed light on her nervousness amid the official return to the WNBA. “Started off a little slow, I think. Just the anxiety of the first game, you know, trying to walk through that. But overall, I felt good and felt fast out there.” All in all, this adds weight to Scott Agness’ assessment of Clark’s body tightening up on occasion due to her anxiety during the game.
From an on-court perspective, there wasn’t a moment in the game where Clark looked out of the blue as well. Of course, she took a bit of time to adjust to the league’s tempo. But once she did, there was no stopping the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year winner.
Clark checked in the scoring with a driving layup in the first quarter of the game. But we didn’t get to see the Clark we all know until the third quarter, when she broke the shackles and dropped 10 points, including 26- and 29-foot three-pointers. The Fever guard finished the night on 20 points with 7 of 18 from the field while chiming in with a team-high 7 assists and 5 rebounds.
The offensive end doesn’t look like a caveat for Caitlin Clark at the moment. The only concerning factor is any injury nemesis that could hamper her shelf life upon return. But the Fever’s coaching staff has given the fans what they’ve been eagerly waiting to hear.
Stephanie White Makes an Honest Assessment Regarding Caitlin Clark’s Fitness
Being the centerpiece of the Indiana Fever, even an ounce of uncertainty around Clark’s fitness creates a stir in the community. After all, it’s quite certain that a player of her stature can be the difference between the Fever being a playoff contender and a Championship contender. As a result, Clark’s back stiffness also created a similar noise, but head coach Stephanie White isn’t much concerned about it.
“I mean, she adjusted her body and focus,” White said in the post-game press conference. “I mean, when we’re all young, we don’t learn proper mechanics, and then it doesn’t get exposed until something happens…This is going to be an ongoing thing. Not just her, I mean, we’ve had multiple players who have gone back.”
“But they’re going to go back and get adjusted and make sure that the body’s working, you know, hip alignment, rib alignment gets off, and it’s part of being a professional athlete. So, nothing really outside of that. She’s okay. I mean, we wouldn’t have played her 30 minutes if she wasn’t okay,” White added further.
The Fever management hasn’t shied away from making decisions to monitor Caitlin Clark’s injury. We’ve seen White play for limited minutes in the preseason games. Although CC faced a disastrous fall in the preseason game against the Wings, the outcome wasn’t much daunting for the team.
Furthermore, the franchise is also trying to use Clark in an off-the-ball role, contrary to her role of driving the ball in every sequence of the game. All of it is just to put minimal pressure on Clark’s physical fitness in the season. In fact, Clark has also been seen trying to put a few procedures of her own in place to keep herself in the best physical shape.
For instance, in the game against the Wings, Clark was seen wearing a heat therapy pad on her back to relieve back stiffness. These caveats won’t possibly force her to miss her upcoming games.
Furthermore, with Stephanie White and the Indiana Fever management looking after her injury and fitness in the best possible way, the franchise can rest assured that their most efficient playmaker on the roster is in for a long run this season. Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever’s next challenge is on May 13 against the LA Sparks, where they will look to secure their first win on the boards.
