Fans Question Angel Reese’s Skill Level After Awkward Moment in Practice Session Goes Viral

At Maryland, Angel Reese averaged just 20 minutes per game. “I just took a quick look at her stats and saw she averaged 20 minutes. I said, ‘How can a coach not play her more than 20 minutes?’” shared LSU assistant Bob Starkey in 2023. The issue? She seemed determined to take full advantage of all five fouls per game, acting like each one came with a paycheck. But before she transitioned to the W, she transferred to LSU. And that’s where it all improved, majorly, as her former HC Kim Mulkey stressed her habit, telling her not to get any “cheapies.”…But has it improved? A big no, if you ask fans—and they’ve got a reason too!

After being tossed out of the playoff run, the Sky are now aiming to break a four-game slide against a team with a similar fate, the Connecticut Sun. It’s the fourth time this season that the two teams will go head-to-head. The last time they met was on August 23, and the Sun won 94–84. So, being a top performer for the Sky, Reese—averaging 14.6 points—needed to come to the forefront. She did and started practicing. As usual, the practice session went smoothly, but there was one moment that grabbed attention.

Getting a first-step travel violation is not uncommon while playing 1s, but Angel Reese quite literally took it a step too far. After posting up against her defender, the Chi-Town Barbie attacked his bottom foot, but ended up travelling twice in the same possession!

Not only did she lift her pivot before putting the rock on the floor, but she also ended up taking three steps before laying the ball up. Reese even ended up missing a layup in the second clip, and her footwork seemed choppy and unrefined. Sure, it wasn’t a travel, but it definitely looked like one. As expected, social media had a meltdown after the lowlights clip went viral online.

People dived straight into the comment sections and started firing back at the 23-year-old Maryland native for her moves. “It’s like the rim is a moving target,” penned a user. Mocking was a must. But the W’s statement just a couple of hours before the reel went viral made it worse: “Angel’s law: An unstoppable force in motion stays in motion, especially in the paint. Your team’s about to learn physics the hard way. Tune in to Sky vs. Fever on September 5th at 7:30 pm ET on ION.” For a player who’s supposed to be a consistent problem in the paint for opposing teams, these moves aren’t acceptable.

“Well, to be fair, she was working on her rebounding,” penned another user. Boards’ Queen—it’s the name she got after she shared, “Everything that comes off that board is mine” before applying for a trademark for the word “mebounds.” So, spectators pulling out such sarcastic takes were expected. Had this happened on court, it would have resulted in a turnover, giving possession to the opposing team. But this isn’t the first time Reese has ended up in the negative spotlight for her fouls.

“I have never seen someone make basketball look so difficult,” penned a spectator on X. Earlier this season, as she went for her second showdown against the Fever, something similar happened during a live game. At a point in the third quarter, AR had a clear travel while going for a shot attempt. As expected, it was called. But it wasn’t her foul alone that garnered eyeballs. Even CC made waves, as she could be seen jumping off her team’s bench while making a travel motion with her hands.

Another user dived in and shared, “This is like coaching the big kid at YMCA ball because he has so much potential,” For those who’ve been watching Reese since her collegiate days, all this seems familiar. Her coaches would send her to the bench in a game whenever she picked up a second foul in a scrimmage. “I’ve gotten in way better shape and I’ve gotten much stronger,” she shared after transitioning to LSU. And rightfully so, as she then went from one foul every 8.4 minutes at Maryland to one every 13.6 minutes at LSU. It seems that habit is sort of returning, and with just five games left in the offseason, Reese has got better work to do!
