Amazon and its executives may bring back one of television’s most iconic reality competition series with a familiar name at the helm. The streamer’s internal discussions could see a member of the Trump family step into the spotlight for a potential revival of a show that once shaped American pop culture.

Amazon is reportedly considering a reboot of The Apprentice for its Prime Video streaming service, according to Variety and the Wall Street Journal. The potential revival would feature Donald Trump Jr. as host instead of his father, President Donald Trump. Discussions remain in the early stages, and Amazon has not yet approached the Trump family about the project.

Amazon declined to comment publicly but addressed the reports through a company spokesperson. “Since our acquisition of MGM, we have had preliminary internal discussions about what’s next for The Apprentice as a property,” the spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal. Variety’s insiders separately confirmed the show is currently “not in development” and there have been no external production discussions.

The Wall Street Journal identified Amazon MGM Studios head Mike Hopkins as spearheading the potential revival internally. Hopkins and other Amazon executives reportedly began discussing the reboot idea in early 2025. Those conversations began around the time Trump took office for his second presidential term, according to people familiar with the talks.

The potential reboot builds on Amazon’s recent efforts to feature the Trump family prominently through its content strategy. Amazon released Melania, a Brett Ratner-directed documentary about the First Lady, in late January 2025. The film broke the record for best opening for a non-fiction feature in the past decade after debuting to $7 million domestically.

The Apprentice originally ran on NBC for 14 seasons from 2004 to 2015, with Trump hosting all 186 episodes. Contestants tackled business challenges each week before facing his signature “You’re fired” elimination catchphrase.

Amazon acquired the show’s back catalog through its 2022 purchase of MGM, and the series earned nine Emmy nominations during its original run.
