Steinberg told Deadline the writers wanted the death to carry emotional weight without sacrificing a series regular. “We wanted to pick a character who’d been in the show from the beginning,” he said. “She was Amy’s nurse in the ICU in the pilot, so she was a familiar face.” Wei appeared in 17 episodes across both seasons, starting with the series premiere.

The showrunner acknowledged the team carefully debated which character should face the fatal outcome. “We wanted to have a hit on the staff but we weren’t ready to kill off any of our regulars that we love,” Steinberg explained. He described the choice as “a happy medium” that would resonate with both characters and audiences alike.

Steinberg confirmed Lucy’s death will carry narrative consequences into Season 3, which will span 22 episodes. “That for sure will hang over people; we like to make sure we carry things through,” he said. The writers room opened this week, with plans for a slight time jump between seasons.

The producer noted the show prioritizes emotional continuity even when storylines shift to the background temporarily. “Even if it’s not hitting over the head with it in the first episode, it might come up again in the fourth episode,” Steinberg said. He stressed the team remains committed to honoring the impact of Lucy’s loss on her Westside colleagues moving forward.
