They tied the knot in emotional scenes in 2021, but the marriage of Coronation Street favourites Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) and Abi Webster (Sally Carman) has been in serious trouble ever since the arrival of Kev’s younger brother Carl (Jonathan Howard).

Ever since Carl and Abi laid eyes on each other in the romantic setting of Freshco car park, it’s been an affair waiting to happen. It was mainly the fact that Kevin was undergoing cancer treatment that helped Abi resist her brother-in-law, but when poor Kevin lied about still having treatment after being given the all clear – because he was afraid Abi would leave him otherwise –  Abi rushed straight into Carl’s arms, in the romantic setting of the garage, because these two love a romantic setting especially if it involves cars.

Their secret affair was soon discovered by Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford), who wasn’t best pleased that Abi got her hands on Carl before she did. Going through a divorce herself, Tracy knew a bit of cash would come in handy and has been blackmailing Carl and Abi in exchange for not telling Kevin what’s been going on.

In upcoming episodes Tracy gets fed up with the instalments that the pair have been paying her and demands the rest of the money the same day. Carl tries to front it out by offering her £500, but Tracy reminds him that all the power is in her hands.

Abi suggests to Carl that it might be a good time to come clean to Kevin – that way, Tracy will be off their backs and they’ll be able to enjoy their happily ever after.

Carl isn’t keen on this plan, which might have something to do with the fact that he’s also ‘entertaining’ James Bailey (Jason Callender) in his room at the Chariot Square Hotel in between visits from Abi, and having her around full time might cramp his style.

He also has his own way of dealing with Tracy, which may or may not involve smashing up her flower shop and threatening her dad – according to Tracy, but we know that Carl is capable of some pretty ruthless behaviour.

But it’s dear old Kev who’s the engine of his own downfall once again. After getting the all-clear from his cancer specialists, he’s incredibly relieved and looking forward to the future with Abi.

She’s less thrilled than he is by the prospect of growing old alongside the grizzled garage owner, especially when he gets her to picture a sunny retirement spent doing up old cars. To Abi this sounds like a slow death compared to the excitement of life with Carl and she drops a bombshell on Kevin, telling him she thinks they should break up.

Snuggling up with Carl at the hotel, Abi suggests they should run away together and start a new life. Once again, Carl is less keen.

Meanwhile Kevin tells Tyrone (Alan Halsall) that his marriage is over – and he suspects his brother might be the reason.
