Constance Wu drew attention after speaking out against Andrew Barth Feldman’s casting in Maybe Happy Ending. The actress shared candid remarks in a social media post, detailing her conversations with Feldman, her disappointment over his decision, and her concerns about Asian American representation and erasure in theater.

Constance Wu is ‘disappointed’ with Andrew Barth Feldman for accepting Maybe Happy Ending role

In her Instagram post, Constance Wu said Andrew Barth Feldman reached out to discuss Asian American representation, which gave her hope at first, but she later stated, “all I can say is that I am so disappointed in him.” She explained that their peaceful discussions included phone calls, texts, and emails before she shared her statement.

The criticism centers on Feldman, who is white, replacing Darren Criss, a Filipino American actor, in the musical set in Seoul, South Korea. Wu and others argue that the role should go to an Asian or Pan-Pacific Island actor. She noted that Asian Americans continue to feel “unheard, unacknowledged, invisible.” Wu also called out the production for staying silent as the controversy unfolded. She apologized to supporters of B.D. Wong’s petition, which gathered more than 2,400 signatures urging producers to recast the role with an Asian actor.

Wu said she told Feldman in advance that she would post about their exchanges. She used the word “disappointed” directly in her message to him. She directed her frustration not only at Feldman but also at the silence from the show’s producers. In her post, she wrote, “A dozen or so folks bts at Maybe Happy Ending have remained silent perhaps in the hopes that this will all fade away.”

Feldman began playing Oliver on September 2. He will hand the role back to Criss before his return in November, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Wu ended her remarks by addressing Feldman directly. She wrote that although his producers may have “unfairly saddled” him with this responsibility, sometimes responsibilities “choose us.” She added, “the question remains, what are you choosing to do with it?”
