Some years ago, Ridley Scott pointed to novice directors being given massive budgets without any prior experience as the main reason why tent poles weren’t working. He said that a filmmaker should ideally level up with each new project, building their way towards a $150 million or $200 million budget, instead of being plucked from obscurity and being handed a massive film after making one indie. The career path that he was referring to aligns perfectly with that of Christopher Nolan. Between his breakout indie Memento and his $150 million Batman Begins, Nolan learned the ropes of studio filmmaking with the $45 million thriller Insomnia. The movie is now witnessing a resurgence on streaming.
