Charlie’s Angels star Cheryl Ladd spoke about her breast cancer publicly for the first time during the PaleyFest 50th anniversary celebration of the classic TV series on April 6. The 74-year-old delved into the difficult details of her battle while sitting beside costars Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith.
“Mine was an aggressive form,” Ladd began about her cancer (via USA Today), “I had wonderful doctors. But I was bald for quite a while. It was a humbling experience.”
She thanked her husband, Brian Russell, for helping her pull through this difficult period. “I have a wonderful husband. All through it, he was there for me at every turn, and that makes a difference,” she said, “Eventually, I started to get little sprouts of hair. It was like, ‘Oh, I’m getting hair!’ It was a long, long, hard road. But you just get through. You just get on with it.”
Right after Ladd spoke, Smith, who is also a survivor of breast cancer, revealed how she tried to help Ladd. “The first thing I did was send her my wigs,” she said, “She was so brave. She did have a very aggressive form [of cancer].” Drawing from her experience, Smith added, “Early detection is the key. Every minute is important.”
Moreover, the actress credited “the power of girlfriends,” including her Charlie’s Angels co-stars. Jackson is also a two-time breast cancer survivor who has become an advocate for early detection.
Ladd took over the role from Kris Munroe, who was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006 and died after losing the battle in 2009.
“If you find a little something in either of your breasts, don’t ignore it,” Ladd said, “It might be nothing. But go quickly and find out for yourself.”
