Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) is being haunted by her past in EastEnders, as she quickly tried to conceal information from mum Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace)

Last week, the BBC soap legend made a spectacular return to Albert Square after two decades away, with a series of flashbacks giving us a glimpse of what life has looked like for her during that time.

After being shot by either Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) or Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) – who were brawling over who got their hands on a gun – she was left fighting for her life.

As Zoe faded in and out of consciousness, we were firstly taken back to 2006.

We learnt that she had a traumatic labour, giving birth to twins – one of whom possibly didn’t survive. The other, a boy, was placed up for adoption after she claimed he had ‘bad blood’.

We’re still none the wiser as to who could of fathered the children, though it’s possible that this is why Zoe is acting so cagey about their existence.

In the years that have followed she’s desperately searched for her son, exhausting all of her finances on a dodgy PI who claimed that he could help her.

Rather surprisingly, she bumped into Max Branning (Jake Wood) in a bar and he offered the 5k she needed to get crucial information on his whereabouts.

The private investigator, Greg Dolan (Dean Williamson), wasn’t willing to tell her everything without even more cash, and he tried to force himself on Zoe, saying that he could think of an alternative way of payment.

She was disgusted, and picked up a lampshade – whacking him several times over the head and knocking him unconscious.

Does Kat know about Zoe’s children?

When Zoe lay on the floor of The Queen Vic hallway, Kat noticed a tattoo on her body.

The artwork showed two footprints, surrounded by angel wings and a halo. It was at this moment that Kat knew that she’d lost at least one child.

In the ambulance, as Zoe’s condition worsened, Kat implored her daughter to open up more and talk about years gone by. When asked about how many children she had, Zoe simply lifted two fingers.

Zoe covers her tracks

In tonight’s episode, Zoe was clearly fearful of her mum doing some digging and finding out about her attack on Greg.

At her hospital bed, a nurse told Kat that she’d had an unsettled night and kept pressing the panic button so that someone would sit with her. She didn’t want to be alone.

On the outside, this may seem like she’s simply on edge after her attack, but it’s more likely that she’s fearful of Greg discovering her location.

Kat was eager to get more answers, pressing her about the ‘enemy’ she had been avoiding.

She also wanted to know more about Zoe’s children, and panic mode began to set in.

Zoe told her that she must be mistaken or have made the whole story up, as she never said that and doesn’t have kids.

Alfie (Shane Richie) suggested that his wife lay off on the questioning for the time being, and when the two left her, she frantically opened her phone.

There was yet another text message from Max, which she swiftly deleted.

Is Max about to make his way back to Walford in search of her?
