A new BBC thriller that has had British viewers hooked ever since it dropped two weeks ago has received an exciting new update.

The Guest, which dropped on September 1, is a four-part series about a toxic relationship that develops between a millionaire business owner and her young cleaner.

Eve Myles plays millionaire Fran Sharp, while Gabrielle Creevy plays young cleaner Ria Powell – their lives become dangerously intertwined as the story progresses.

The series has proven itself to be a hit with viewers, with fan Suzanne Beadle saying on Facebook: ‘Watched all four episodes, it was brilliant – fantastic acting. Eve Myles, terrific actress.’

A BBC synopsis reads: ‘When cleaner Ria is hired by mysterious businesswoman Fran, an unlikely friendship is formed. But when Fran’s advice leads to tragedy, Ria’s life is changed forever.’

Further episodes are teased: ‘Ria faces the police while trying to pick up the pieces… But that will mean cutting Fran off entirely. Can she ever go back to her old life?’

And it seems the series, which many viewers thought might stay as a miniseries, is going to carry on in one way or another if its creators and writers have their way.

One of the leading figures on the show, Matthew Barry, has always had a potential second season in the back of his mind, admitting that he hopes to bring it back.

He told the Royal Television Society magazine, ‘From the start, we planned to come back for another season,’ and compared the series to the Matt Damon film The Talented Mr Ripley.

Even in the event that The Guest becomes an anthological series, he added: ‘We’d still explore social mobility and class in a Ripley/Parasite-esque thriller, but with different characters and a different story.’

He concluded: ‘I’ve always been drawn to Ripley-esque thrillers where you enter a world through a character.’

So, while a second season is yet to be absolutely confirmed, things are looking promising for BBC iPlayer viewers who want more from Fran and Ria in the future.

Speaking about The Guest’s first season on Facebook, Kathie Vallin said: ‘Watched three episodes last night but had to go to bed as was past midnight.

‘[I’ll] catch up on final episode tonight – it’s brilliant and tense and keeps you on your toes.’

Val Lawson pleaded for more: ‘The Guest is fabulous. The BBC should do more like this, it kept me wondering about the characters from start to finish!’

Christine Simmonds agreed, saying: ‘Anything Eve Myles is in is worth watching. All cast very good. Enjoyed this immensely. Recommend it as a jolly good watch.’
