The brand new look at HBO’s upcoming Lanterns series has finally been released. Three new photos from the DC Studios production are out, showing Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, and Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry in scenes that seem more terrestrial crime drama than intergalactic adventure.

The Green Lantern’s new looks paint a restrained picture. One shows Hal Jordan mid-gesture, arm extended, ring visible, his face set with quiet intensity. Another places both Lanterns side by side on a set of wooden bleachers while Sheriff Kerry twists around to glance at something behind her.

The third one focuses entirely on John Stewart, walking alone along a ruined road, smoke hanging in the air, the Green Lantern Power Battery gripped in one hand and a backpack in the other.

Chris Mundy on Lanterns:

"It's a Green Lantern show, so there's green. I think Green Lantern fans will not feel like we've somehow made a brown show of their green comic at all. It's very much 'we're in the world,' and then when we use the constructs, they're what people would… pic.twitter.com/XFYqQw5guC

Showrunner Chris Mundy, who created the eight-episode series alongside Damon Lindelof and Tom King, explained that the creative team deliberately pulled the story down to street level. “We wanted to tell an on-the-ground story, and that has a couple of different mysteries inside of it,” Mundy told Entertainment Weekly.

“We wanna use everything that’s great about the mythology of the Green Lanterns. But at the same time, we wanted it to feel like an upscale mystery, a very emotionally tangible story about these people that are in it.”

Chris Mundy says that Lanterns is designed to be a multi-season show.

The plot kicks off with a shooting in a small town, which immediately creates friction between Sheriff Kerry and the arriving Lantern Corps. Mundy framed it as a question of authority. “There’s a familiar tension just in terms of jurisdiction. It’s not like FBI and locals. It’s the Lantern Corps and a local sheriff. That’s our entry into that town and into the mystery.”

There are two timelines in Lanterns.

The supporting cast includes Nathan Fillion, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan. Additionally, Ulrich Thomsen, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, Sherman Augustus, and Paul Ben-Victor. With James Gunn and Peter Safran among the executive producers, Lanterns is set to premiere on HBO on August 16.
