AMC's crime thriller spinoff series rewrote the rules about what a great spinoff could be. Spinoffs on television are as old as The Honeymooners being spun off from The Jackie Gleason Show, and I'm sure you could dig around and find an even earlier example of networks mining shows from the same story vein.
