Below Teaser Trailer: Josh Hartnett Battles a Sea Monster in Creepy Netflix TV Show

Netflix has released the teaser trailer for Josh Hartnett’s upcoming mysterious thriller miniseries titled Below. It will see Hartnett’s character battle a sea monster in Newfoundland. The actor will play Calvin Penney, a fisherman whose village is attacked by the monster. This prompts Calvin to dive deep into uncovering the mystery under the ocean, aided by the village’s residents.

The intriguing trailer teases the show’s central premise without giving away the creature’s design. Hartnett is shown leading a tight-knit community disturbed by “unusual activities” in the village’s waters. As Calvin warns others to steer clear of the ocean, the teaser shows haunting footage of a house in the middle of the sea drowning due to the unseen monster’s attacks.

Who else stars in Netflix’s Below with Josh Hartnett?

Hartnett will be joined by fellow stars Mackenzie Davis, Charlie Heaton, Natasha Henstridge, Ruby Stokes, Kaleb Horn, Willow Kean, and Rohan Campbell. Davis compared her character’s dynamic with Hartnett’s to “two buddy cops solving a mystery.”

The miniseries is created by Jesse McKeown, who also serves as its showrunner. It was shot on location in Newfoundland. “It’s such a unique landscape and so rugged, dangerous, isolated, and scary in a lot of ways,” McKeown told Tudum. The showrunner previously wrote episodes of The Umbrella Academy, The Romeo Section, 19-2, and more.

To prepare for his role, Hartnett listened to a local radio station daily, while Heaton hung out in bars outside St. John’s, Newfoundland’s capital. Heaton said, “When you meet Newfoundlanders, they want to bring you in, and they want to look after you.” The Stranger Things actor added that shooting on location so much was a big change from his previous Netflix hit.

Below will be released on Netflix on October 8, 2026.
