Beloved David Spade Comedy Movie Is Getting a Sequel, But Not How Fans Thought

After debuting in 2001 and returning in a sequel over a decade later, David Spade‘s classic comedy is making another comeback. Instead of a new movie, Spade will reprise the role in a new animated series of Joe Dirt in development at Fox, reprising the role in a new chapter of the character’s life.

As revealed by Deadline, the animated series will follow Joe 25 years after the original film as he navigates married life, fatherhood, and a fresh set of misadventures. This won’t be the first time the franchise has set its sights on television. Spade worked on a pilot for an animated series at TBS in 2010 before it was axed.

What the new Joe Dirt sequel series is about

According to the report, the series will see Joe still in love with Brandy and raising three teenage daughters. While life throws new challenges at him, “He’s still got his eternal optimism. And he needs it – just because he’s married with three teenage daughters doesn’t mean his problems are over. The messes are bigger, and Joe’s mop and bucket just won’t cut it,” reads the logline.

Spade originally played the character in the 2001 film directed by Dennie Gordon. While it was a critical failure, the film grossed nearly twice its production budget during its theatrical run, eventually earning cult status. However, the sequel, directed by Fred Wolf, wasn’t released until 2015. The second film, titled Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser, also received negative reviews.

The upcoming series will be written by Scott Gairdner and executive produced by Spade. The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment. Wolf is also executive producing the series.

Spade’s most recent appearances were in this year’s Outcome and Busboys. He also gave an update on Grown Ups 3 recently, which was announced by Netflix earlier this year.

The Joe Dirt animated series does not yet have a release date.
