A far cry from his punishing dramas about characters pushing themselves beyond their breaking point, like The Wrestler and Black Swan, Darren Aronofskyis trying his hand at a comic crime caper with the upcoming Caught Stealing, which opens in theaters on August 29th. Starring Austin Butler as a former baseball player tangled in a mess between various corners of the criminal underworld in New York City in the 1990s, the film suggests that Aronofsky is cribbing from the crime dramas of Martin Scorsese, particularly Mean Streets and Goodfellas. However, the director's true inspiration lies in After Hours, Scorsese's 1985 indie black comedy, which makes the events in Caught Stealing look like a cakewalk.
