New York Knicks fans have been coming after every single critic who ever doubted them ever since the franchise finally claimed its NBA championship. And Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon is one of them. The catch is, popular New York reporter Adam Schein decided to take that to a new level entirely. Rather than simply calling out Hammon for what she said, he went a step further and issued something resembling a formal banishment, most certainly banter, but pointed in intent.
“Becky Hammon is officially banned from the parade,” he said in a video shared on his Instagram page. “In fact, I’ll take it a step further, she’s banned from not only the parade, but from New York City. All five boroughs. So we’ll give it a 365-day banishment for Becky, not a lifetime ban.”
The criticism Becky Hammon is now facing traces back to an opinion she aired back in 2023. Appearing as an analyst on ESPN’s NBA Today, she argued that the Knicks lacked a true “1A dude,” the kind of franchise-defining superstar required to win a championship. For her, with a smaller lead guard like Jalen Brunson at the helm, New York simply did not have what it takes to win it all.
History, as it turns out, had other plans. Not only did the Knicks win the NBA championship, but Jalen Brunson himself carried them there in unforgettable fashion. He dropped 45 points in Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals to seal the title against the San Antonio Spurs and claimed NBA Finals MVP honors in the process.
Perhaps Hammon would face less criticism today, since she made her original comments more than two years before the championship win. But she did little to earn any grace from Knicks fans when she doubled down on her stance even after Brunson earned Eastern Conference Finals MVP, a moment that, in hindsight, should have been the clearest signal that her original read had not aged well at all.
Banning Hammon from the parade is, in a strange way, understandable, a bit of harmless fan theater after a long-awaited title. But then again, maybe that kind of dramatic overreaction is exactly what a fanbase can have after waiting 53 years for a moment like this one.
Becky Hammon’s Statement Might Have Fueled Jalen Brunson’s Championship Run
While Jalen Brunson hasn’t directly responded to Becky Hammon’s now-infamous prophecy, he has acknowledged that there were plenty of doubters along the way.
“There are a lot of people who say a lot of things,” he said during the championship parade.
And even though he didn’t single out Hammon specifically, there is a strong possibility he knew exactly what she had said, and may have even used it as fuel. Knicks forward Mikal Bridges all but confirmed as much in an Instagram Live video earlier this week.
“I appreciate Becky, no cap. The words she said about can’t win with JB being 1A and he’s too little, all that did was fuel him,” Bridges said.
Brunson himself hasn’t directly addressed Hammon’s comments, and based on Bridges’ framing, it seems unlikely he ever will. And in the same vein, Becky Hammon has remained equally silent on the matter since the Knicks secured the title. Rather than engaging with the criticism or attempting to clarify her original comments, she has chosen to keep her focus where it belongs, on her own Las Vegas Aces team and their pursuit of a championship of their own.
