Rookie Athletics slugger Nick Kurtz was removed from their game against the Texas Rangers on Friday with right oblique soreness, Martín Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
It is unclear what caused the injury. Kurtz scored from second on a Brent Rooker double in the top of the third inning and was replaced in the field by Carlos Cortes in the bottom half of the inning.
The 22-year-old had a .309/.401/.634 slash line with 27 home runs and 70 RBIs in 93 games this season entering play on Friday. His 1.034 OPS would rank second in the major leagues to Aaron Judge were he qualified.
Kurtz was a -10000 favourite to win the American League Rookie of the Year award enter Friday’s game according to BetMGM. Fellow Athletics infielder Jacob Wilson was initially favoured to capture the honours earlier this season before missing a month with a left forearm fracture.
