Most shows waiting on renewal exist in a kind of limbo, as viewers hesitate to start them because no one wants to invest in a story that may never continue. But Dennis Lehane’s Apple TV crime thriller Smoke has slipped into a rarer category, one where uncertainty has oddly improved its value. Thanks to fresh Season 2 comments, including renewed discussion of Lehane’s long-stated three-season plan, Smoke no longer feels like a brilliant one-off people missed or an unfinished story hanging in the balance. It feels like both a complete experience and a series with credible room to continue.
