Polly Holliday, a well-known TV and movie actress, was announced dead by sources close to her. Holliday’s most notable on-screen character was the sassy waitress Flo Castleberry in the popular ‘70s sitcom “Alice”. Her career has spanned decades, starring in many popular movies and shows.

Here’s a brief overview of her career.

Polly Holliday passes away at 88 due to undisclosed reasons

On September 9, Polly Holliday passed away due to undisclosed reasons. Her theatrical agent and friend, Dennis Aspland, confirmed her death to the fans.

Born on July 2, 1937, Holliday was most popularly known for her portrayal of Flo Castleberry in Alice. Her character on the show was often described as funny and witty for her sharp comebacks. Flo’s phrase, “Kiss my grits!”, became very popular among the fans of the show.

Although she was on the “Alice” for only four seasons, the audience loved her. So, CBS, the studio behind Alice, decided to give the character her own spinoff series, “Flo.” It ran for two seasons between 1980 and 1981.

Along with TV and movies, she also had a successful career as a theater actress. She began acting on stage while studying piano at Alabama College for Women. She later joined the Asolo Repertory Theater in Florida. After nearly ten years there, she moved to New York and made her Broadway debut in 1974. She was even nominated for a Tony Award in 1990 for her role as Big Mama in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, starring alongside Charles Durning.

Holliday also appeared in several well-known films, like Gremlins, The Parent Trap, All the President’s Men, and Mrs. Doubtfire. She’s also been on over a dozen TV shows. She’s appeared on shows like The Gift of Love: A Christmas Story, Home Improvement, Amazing Stories, and The Golden Girls. She has been nominated for Primetime Emmys four times over the course of her career.

Since Holliday never married or had any kids, she’s left with no immediate survivors following her death.
