US President Donald Trump during a "No Tax on Tips" roundtable in Las Vegas, Nevada, US, on Thursday, April 16, 2026. President Donald Trump poked fun at the DoorDash delivery promotion held at the Oval Office earlier this week, calling it “tacky” and “embarrassing” after it was brutally mocked online.
“Sharon delivered McDonald’s to the Oval Office. Was a little bit of a, you know, I mean, to be honest, a little tacky,” Trump said at an event in Las Vegas on Thursday. “You know, they come up with these crazy ideas.”
The PR stunt posted on Monday featured DoorDash driver Sharon Simmons, 58, a grandmother from Arkansas, hand-delivering McDonald’s to Trump at the White House. The president later hands Simmons a tip after a reporter asks whether the White House staff were good tippers.
The video was staged to promote the president’s “no tax on tips” policy as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (rebranded as the Working Families Tax Cut Act).
The White House claimed that Simmons, who wore a bright red shirt reading “DoorDash Grandma,” had saved “$11,000” last year because of Trump’s policy, and it had gone towards her husband’s cancer treatment.

Trump himself joked to the reporters, “This doesn’t look staged.”
The online mockery prompted DoorDash’s head of public affairs, Julian Crowley, to have a meltdown on X, confronting other users who were slamming the promotion.
“I love a conspiracy as much as the next person but man you need to touch grass,” Crowley replied to one user. “It was a special delivery to mark a policy that has bipartisan support with the media in attendance,”
However, Trump had other thoughts about the PR stunt, calling it “a little embarrassing.”
The president added, “We do these things in politics. They’re a little embarrassing. They’re a little tiny embarrassing, but we do them, and you win by landslides.”
