The 1990s were a renaissance for action films, but they weren’t all hits. The ‘80s saw the emergence of several classics that established structures that would be replicated and ripped off well into the ‘90s; Lethal Weapon showed what a buddy cop adventure could look like, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior was the basis of all post-apocalyptic thrillers, Batman reignited interest in the superhero genre, First Blood looked at what a military-themed survival drama could be, and Die Hard created a template for countless films that would be pitched as “Die Hard on a ___.” While these seemed like simple formulas to follow, some films just completely missed the mark.
