The fantasy genre is special. While the mere utterance of the word fantasy will, for most people, conjure images of magical kingdoms, dragons and the like, the genre can encompass worlds and characters far more vast and varied. A fantasy is, by definition, something divorced from reality, fiction grounded in something outside the scientific world. When it comes to movies, it can mean many things: we've got high fantasy, low fantasy, magical realism, historical fantasy, science fantasy, epic fantasy, and urban fantasy. Those are but a few permutations that can, and do, intersect and overlap with regular frequency. There's no one thing that makes something fantasy, but you know fantasy when you see it, even when it's dark.
