Great novels tend to be synonymous with great openings. Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, for example: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,". Or, Gibson's Neuromancer: "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel." And as tough as it is to craft a first sentence that catchy, following it up with an unforgettable opening scene is an even greater challenge.
