Once regarded as one of MLB’s promising young talents, former Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco has recently attracted attention for troubling reasons. The 23-year-old signed a $182 million extension with Tampa Bay in 2021, but his career trajectory has since faced significant challenges.

This week, Franco posted a video on Instagram alleging that a Dominican hotel had stolen one million pesos from his room. He claimed that he had left two million pesos at Hotel Hispaniola Beach in Sosua, Puerto Plata, but upon return, found only half. “Let’s attack the owner of Hispaniola Beach in Sosua… They steal a million pesos from me. They were harassing me for days,” he remarked in the video.

The video quickly went viral and drew attention within MLB circles. However, Franco’s lawyer, Teodicio Jaquez, later clarified the situation. “The money was recovered in the same hotel room. It was just a misunderstanding.” He also issued an apology to the hotel on Franco’s behalf.

Nonetheless, the incident continued to escalate, culminating in police arriving during an Instagram Live session to arrest Franco. According to MLB player Cesar Puello and reporter Hector Gomez, Franco’s father was present and requested police intervention, citing concerns about his son’s delicate physiological condition; however, this detail has not been confirmed by official sources.

This incident unfolds while Franco remains suspended by MLB, casting further uncertainty on his return to professional baseball. Just two years ago, Franco was considered a top prospect, displaying solid defensive skills and posting a .282 batting average over his first three seasons. However, a previous controversial case in 2023 led to his suspension.

Questions about the credibility of the recent incident have surfaced, as this is not Franco’s first high-profile theft claim.

In June 2022, while on a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Durham Bulls, Franco’s Rolls-Royce Cullinan was broken into at a hotel in the United States. A suspect, 24-year-old Kahlil Eugene Mathis, was arrested for allegedly using a wrench to shatter the car window and steal a safe containing approximately $650,000 worth of jewelry. The stolen items reportedly included a $300,000 gold Cuban link chain with a diamond-studded “W” medallion, a $200,000 rose gold Cuban link chain, a $70,000 Franco-themed pendant, a $44,000 diamond Rolex, and two championship rings valued at $20,000 each.

Authorities recovered some of the valuables, but the Rolex and the chains were never returned. This case was substantiated, but the details surrounding the recent hotel money claim remain unclear.

Addressing the situation on Instagram, Franco stated, “My own people, my own country, want to hurt me without me doing anything… I will leave the networks for a while because even playing the victim of trials, they blame me only for money, with God.”

In light of the controversies surrounding Wander Franco, his career remains overshadowed by both off-field incidents and on-field potential. As the situation evolves, the question of whether he can reclaim his status as a top MLB talent continues to be a subject of keen interest and speculation.
