Vampires are back, baby!
If you cut your teeth on Twilight and/or you are joyful about the shift from “Louis and Lestat are in love” subtext to “Louis and Lestat are married and regularly bang” text, you’re loving this new influx of vampire romance to our midst. Vampires have been a mainstay in romance and never particularly disappeared, but their resurgence is something I’m enjoying immensely.
If you’re a regular paranormal romance reader, you’ve probably already picked up the classic, ongoing series: Immortals After Dark by Kresley Cole, Lynsay Sands’s Argenau series, Christine Feehan’s Carpathians, etc. Instead, I’ve pulled together some (mostly) newer books, some set in this world, others more fantasy, and some that are someplace in between.
There are funny vampire books and sad vampire books, snarky and earnest ones. Some don’t particularly use the term vampire, but they’re blood drinkers either way. Whether you’re a veteran reader of the genre or just dipping a toe in, there’s something on this list for you. You can even start with the young adult ones to ease your way in, then really go ham with the bloodier, more explicit ones.
While some of these stand alone, per romance series rules, romantasy doesn’t always conclude with an HEA in the first volume. And of course, none of these are particularly cozy; check the content warnings!
Blood Moon by Britney S. LewisThis is one of my most anticipated books of the year! The author has purported it as her “Justice for Bonnie Bennett” book, and I am here for it. Mira has just started her freshman year at Lakeland University when she meets Julian, a mysterious but intriguing classmate. After he saves her from falling to her death, even more weird things start to reveal themselves, and all the stories she heard about the enclave of Kansas where she grew up might turn out to be true. |
Court of the Vampire Queen by Katee RobertOriginally released in three volumes, Court of the Vampire Queen pulls together the entire Bloodline Vampires trilogy, in which half-human, half-vampire Mina is given to vampire leader Malachi as a blood offering. When his two best friends also join the fray, they all have…a lot of sex. Eventually, Mina will find the power to get vengeance on her father, taking the crown that’s rightfully hers. And then, more sex. Go with it. |
I Accidentally Hooked Up With A Vampire by Jessica CageIn Jessica Cage’s second accidental outing, Whitney drowns a few too many of her sorrows after losing her job and ends up (as the title indicates) hooking up with a vampire. One night with Domino turns into a budding relationship, which is already a bit of a confusing situation, but now she’s also in danger. Jessica Cage’s brand of comedy is fun and compelling, and the adventure you’ll go on with her main characters is always a memorable one. |
Hot Blooded by Heather GuerreWhile this is the second in a series, you can start here (though you might find yourself interested enough in the world to go back to the first book). Tessa is in a lot of debt, and one of the easiest ways to make money is to sign up for a blood-matching service. She expects it to be horrible, but Amos, the vampire she’s been matched with, is kind. Not to mention, her physical reaction to having her blood taken is…the opposite of what she expected. But no matter that Amos thinks she’s the perfect bloodmate, she’s only supposed to be in this gig temporarily. |
A Cruel Thirst by Angela MontoyaCarolina is determined to prove to her family that she would make a significantly better vampire hunter than she would some man’s wife, but at her age, girls are supposed to get married. When she runs into a newly-turned sediento who himself is on a mission to end their curse and find the place where the first vampire was made, the two join forces to save their world from the evil beings that hound it. This is one of the few vampire stories I’ve seen inspired by Mesoamerican mythology, and the worldbuilding and the romance combined look great! |
Chapel at Ender’s Ridge by Beckett KraneIf you ever saw a Western and thought, wouldn’t this be great if it was not only queer af, but full of vampires and other otherworldly creatures, this is the book for you! In an alternative Wild West, Decker heads to the town of Ender’s Ridge, where creatures like him can start afresh and live the quiet life they desire. When a new preacher comes to town, Decker isn’t the only one who mistrusts him, but Laurie might be one of the only solutions to potential disaster for the whole town. |
Immortal Dark by Tigest GirmaThe first in a new dark academia series, Immortal Dark introduces us to a world where humans and vampires thrive through connection. When Kidan’s sister disappears, she’s determined to get to the bottom of it. Certain that the underbelly of Uxlay University is responsible for June’s disappearance, Kidan makes an effort to infiltrate a secret society, all the while living with Susenyos, the vampire she believes responsible for June’s kidnapping. |
Suckerpunch by Elyse SpringerIn another “wouldn’t this subgenre be great with vampires” situation, this time we’ve got hockey! When minor league hockey player Alex is called up to replace the injured goalie of the Seattle Cascades, he’s sure that all of his dreams have come true. But Sasha, said goalie’s very hot best friend, hates Alex on sight, making it hard to work as a team. Between navigating the rough waters of a new team and trying to keep his vampirism a secret, he’s having a rough go at being the new rookie. |
King of Battle and Blood by Scarlett St. ClairA betrothal to cover up an assassination scheme? Yes, please. Isolde knows that the day she gets married is the day she’ll die. Because her goal in marrying is wholly connected to the plot to assassinate her betrothed. But the plan is thwarted, and instead she must live among the vampire court, all while trying to survive the machinations of her new husband. |
A Vow for the Vamp by Settle MyerThis is a grumpy/sunshine vampire romance where she’s the grumpy one and also a fat vampire! Millie has been living with her curse for 500 years, and she’s ready to give it all up, just for some peace. But when she meets Teddy the night she’s ready to implement her plans, she takes him home instead. What if it turns out they are each what the other is looking for? |
Dark Intentions by Aliza MannI didn’t know what I was missing in my life until I discovered vampire matchmaking. Farrah has helped plenty of immortals find love, but doesn’t really have much faith when it comes to finding her own match. When Anwar comes to her to find a match in order to meet protocol, the pair have to determine if their chemistry is worth pursuing, or if they should stay in their lanes. |
Fang Fiction by Kate Stayman-LondonWant to go meta? Tess lives in New York, where she manages a fancy Brooklyn hotel and copes with the horrors of the world with her favorite vampire novels. But when the villain from Blood Feud shows up in her home, she agrees to go on the adventure of a lifetime: join him in the book series’ universe to help rescue him. |
This Ravenous Fate by Hayley DenningsThe first in a duology (which concludes with Our Vicious Descent), This Ravenous Fate introduces us to an alternate Jazz Age where there are vampires and vampire hunters. Elise and Layla were friends once, until Layla was turned into a reaper and Elise fled to Europe. Now, though, Elise is back in Harlem, and she and Layla must work together to solve the mystery of a slew of murders that seem to be connected to reapers and that Layla is currently being held responsible for. The pair has a lot to hash out if they’ll ever be friends again, or anything more. |
A Long Time Dead by Samara BregerThis gothic romance has a dark, horror-leaning vibe, and it also has a love story that will make you swoon. Poppy and Roisin are very much opposites, but perfectly balance each other as Roisin helps Poppy adjust to life as a vampire in Victorian England. There are moments of sheer dread alongside moments of absolute hilarity in this slowly unfolding story. |
