Noir film exists in all shapes and forms, but we must face the truth—black and white noir movies are the best. The genre "began" in the 1940s, when the French film critic Nino Frank coined the term in 1946, though the name didn't catch on immediately. French filmmakers and critics adopted the phrase and deemed a movie "noir" if it encompassed the post-war mood and darkness of the times, though in the US, they were melodramas at best.
