It’s extremely rare that a TV show achieves greatness in its very first episode. It has happened before — Lost, Breaking Bad, and Six Feet Under all kicked off with incredible pilot episodes — but they’re the exceptions, not the rule. It usually takes a few episodes for a writing staff to figure out the characters’ voices, and for an ensemble cast to settle into their roles and their on-screen dynamics with each other.
