A film can only ever be as great as its screenplay; because while it's perfectly possible to transform an unremarkable screenplay into a serviceable-enough movie, the only way for a film to go down in history as a truly legendary classic is if it's based on an equally legendary screenplay. Throughout film history, there have been innumerable great scripts written for innumerable great movies, but there are a precious handful worthy of being considered the greatest of all time.
